Biodegradable Urns for Ashes

These biodegradable urns break down naturally once they're laid to rest, in the ground or in water.

The Limbo Samsara and Limbo Oleo, made from sand or crushed olive pips, dissolve within minutes in the sea or a river and can hold a sapling for planting. The Tierra urns hold 4 litres and can stay on display at home until you're ready, because they only start to break down once they're buried (or, for the Arena, placed in water).

Which biodegradable urn suits your plans?

Water burial at sea or in a river

Choose the Limbo Samsara or Limbo Oleo, which dissolve in five to ten minutes, or the Tierra Arena, which takes about 20. The Tierra Fuego and Hielo have a glaze that stops them dissolving, so they aren't suitable for water.

The Limbo urns hold 2.3 litres, which suits a smaller adult or a large pet. For anyone over about 10 stone, the 4 litre Tierra Arena is the better choice for water.

Burying in the ground

All five can be buried. The Tierra Arena breaks down in one to two weeks, while the glazed Fuego and Hielo take decades, slowly returning the ashes to the soil. The Limbo urns can also go beside an existing tree, or into a grave where the cemetery allows it.

Planting a tree

The Limbo urns have a lid that can be swapped for a sapling of your choice, so you can plant a tree with the ashes. You can start it in a large planter and move it into the ground later.

For scattering on land, our woven willow, bamboo and seagrass scatter tubes are fully biodegradable too.

Common questions about biodegradable urns

How long does a biodegradable urn take to break down?

It depends on the urn. In water, the Limbo urns dissolve in five to ten minutes and the Tierra Arena in about 20. In soil, the Arena takes one to two weeks, while the glazed Tierra Fuego and Hielo take decades.

Can I use a biodegradable urn for a water burial?

Yes, with the Limbo Samsara, Limbo Oleo or Tierra Arena. Lower the urn gently into the water and it will dissolve, releasing the ashes below the surface. Check any local rules for the spot you have in mind first.

Can I bury ashes in my garden?

Yes, if you own the garden or have the landowner's permission. If you might move house one day, bear in mind that the ashes will stay with the property.

Can I keep a biodegradable urn at home first?

Yes. The Tierra urns are made for display and won't start to break down until they're placed in soil (or, for the Arena, in water). Keep the Limbo urns somewhere dry until the day, as they're designed to dissolve.

Are these urns suitable for a natural burial ground?

Many woodland and natural burial grounds ask for a biodegradable container, and each site sets its own rules. Tell them which urn you have in mind before you buy, as the glazed Tierra urns take decades to break down.
