Scatter Tubes for Ashes

Scatter tubes for ashes make scattering simpler, because you open the tube on the day and tip it gently to let the ashes out.

Our printed tubes come in a large 2.4 litre size or a small 0.2 litre size for sharing, and they contain no metal or plastic. For a larger person or a burial, the woven willow, seagrass and bamboo tubes hold 3.8 litres and break down in the ground like our biodegradable urns.

Choosing a scatter tube

Printed or natural?

The printed tubes show scenes such as a bluebell wood, poppies or sunflowers, and they can be recycled or composted afterwards. The Bluebell Forest tube is a popular choice.

The woven willow tube and its seagrass and bamboo partners hold the ashes in a cotton bag you can tie and untie, which helps if you'd like to scatter in more than one place. The whole tube can be buried afterwards, and if you'd like to keep a little of the ashes at home, a keepsake urn holds a small share.

Flying with ashes

The printed tubes are suitable for carrying in the cabin of a plane. Take the certificate of cremation and a copy of the death certificate, and check your airline's rules before you book.

If you're still deciding, our guide to scattering ashes or keeping them at home may help.

Common questions about scatter tubes

How do scatter tubes work?

Lift off the lid, push in the perforated tab to open the tube, then tip it gently so the ashes flow out. Stand with the wind behind you and keep the tube low to the ground or water.

What size scatter tube do I need?

The large printed tube holds 2.4 litres, enough for an adult up to about 10 stone. For someone heavier, choose a 3.8 litre natural tube or use two large tubes. The small 0.2 litre tube suits a share of the ashes or a cat's ashes.

Do you need permission to scatter ashes?

On your own land, no. Anywhere else you need the landowner's permission, so for a park speak to the local council, and for places like National Trust land, contact them first. There's no specific law against scattering ashes in the UK, but asking ahead avoids problems on the day.

Can you scatter ashes anywhere in the UK?

Almost anywhere, as long as the landowner agrees. You might choose a garden, a wood, a hilltop, a beach or the sea, and most crematoria have a garden of remembrance set aside for scattering.
