Wooden Urns for Ashes

Our wooden urns for ashes are box caskets in solid oak, mahogany and Paulownia, finished in high-gloss lacquer or white gloss, with single and keepsake sizes and a double urn for two people.

Most carry a brass-effect or silver-effect plaque that we engrave free, and our carved oak range has your words cut into the wood instead.

Choosing a wooden urn

Which wood?

Oak is our most popular wood, honey-toned with a grain that shows clearly under the gloss. Mahogany is darker and redder, as on the solid mahogany casket, and several oak designs also come in a high white gloss.

Paulownia is a fast-growing hardwood that's noticeably lighter to carry, and the Paulownia moulded casket is one of our best sellers.

What comes with each casket

Full-size caskets arrive with a sealable bag for the ashes and a cotton drawstring bag to place it in, and doubles come with two of each. Plaque engraving and fitting cost nothing extra, and the base is held on with screws so the casket can be opened later.

Words carved into the wood

If you'd like words or a design cut into the wood itself, our engraved wooden urns are carved by a computer-guided router, and we email you a preview of how it will look.

Common questions about wooden urns

Are your wooden urns made from solid wood?

Yes. Every casket in this range is solid, sustainably sourced hardwood (oak, mahogany or Paulownia) finished with a gloss lacquer.

Can a wooden urn be buried?

Yes, they're made to be buried as well as displayed, in a cemetery plot, churchyard or your own garden. Some woodland burial grounds only accept biodegradable urns, so check the site's rules first.

Should I choose a wooden or a metal urn?

Choose wood if you'd like a box shape with an engraved plaque. Metal urns are rounded with a threaded or screw-top lid, and each single brass design also comes in a matching keepsake size for sharing. Full-size urns and caskets of either kind hold the full ashes of most adults.

How do I put the ashes inside?

Pour the ashes into the sealable bag provided, close it and slip it into the cotton drawstring bag. Undo the screws on the base, place the bag inside and screw the base back on. Your funeral director may be able to do this for you if you'd rather not.

How much does a wooden urn hold?

Single caskets hold 3.4 to 3.6 litres, enough for most adults. Doubles hold 5.6 to 6.8 litres for two people, and the oak keepsake casket holds a share of the ashes or a pet's ashes.
